Workshop 1. Time 2nd December, 2026: Helping Clients to Survive and Thrive in a Challenging Environment: Working with suicidal and depressed clients using REBT
Trainers: Trainers: Denise Christy & Edelweiss Collings
This workshop will help clinicians to develop skills in working with suicidal clients, including development of a person-centred safety plan. It will refer to research and the recent NHS Guidance around working with suicidal clients. It will also include interactive exercises.
The workshop will be split into two parts:
PART ONE: Helping suicidal clients to survive: Interventions in working with suicidal clients – including development of a safety plan to avoid acting on suicidal impulses and REBT interventions to work with suicidal thinking.
PART TWO: Helping depressed (and potentially suicidal) clients to thrive. After a client has learnt to cope well with suicidal urges: what next? How can you use REBT to help your client to build hope and a better life moving forward.
Timing of Workshop:
9.30am to 11.30 Midday PART ONE
12.15 to 2.15pm PART TWO

Workshop 2. Time 2.30 to 4.30. 2nd December, 2026: Sleeping Well in SPACE
Trainer: Nick Edgerton FAREBT Accred CPsychol
Something like a third of our lives is spent asleep or trying to be asleep. The time and quality of our sleep has a significant effect on our psychological wellbeing and quality of life. The workshop will be based on the conceptual framework provided by the ‘Bio-Psycho-Social Model’ called SPACE which incorporates Rational Emotive-Cognitive Behavioural counselling and coaching techniques. SPACE prompts us to explore the Social, Physical, Behavioural, Cognitive and Emotional aspects of sleep. Brief accounts of these aspects and relevant research will be followed by personal exploration and application practice in breakout rooms. This workshop is a follow-up to Nick’s keynote paper presented at the AREBT conference in 2025.
Booking
Cost: AREBT Members Free (or voluntary contribution). Non-Members: £20.

Workshop 3 – Relaxation Club. Time TBC GMT. 2nd December, 2026
The Relaxation Club is led by Prof Stephen Palmer FAREBT & Dr Siobhain O’Riordan MAREBT (Acad)
Join our Relaxation Club which will be facilitated by Prof Stephen Palmer and Dr Siobhain O’Riordan. In this session there will be a brief introduction to the limited research we have on the percentage of therapeutic practitioners using relaxation in their practice. Then the Rational Emotive Multimodal Relaxation Method developed by Stephen will be discussed and then attendees can have a go at using the technique in the session.
Relaxation is compatible with the behavioural and multimodal dimensions of REBT, but surprisingly little research has examined how frequently REBT therapists actually teach or use relaxation techniques within their counselling practice. Broader surveys suggest that it is used by a substantial minority of CBT-oriented practitioners, although its use varies by therapeutic orientation and clinical presentation.
If you are new to using relaxation techniques, then the Rational Emotive Multimodal Relaxation Method introduces the ‘Relaxer’ to a range of different relaxation techniques providing the opportunity to try out Passive Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Diaphragmatic breathing, and imagery. It also includes Rational self-talk statement(s) which target any presenting issue the client, trainee or coachee wishes to address.
